About the bath
The history of the mineral baths in Provadiya begins at the start of the 20th century, when a soldier came across a salt spring by chance in the “Tuzlata” locality. In 1923 a small bath with the healing water was built for the workers of the salt works. As the benefits of the water became more popular, a new bath with one section opened in 1935; a second section was added later.
The present building was put up in 1962 as a large modern bath and balneotherapy centre. Interestingly, it was fed by pipelines from two springs with water of different composition and qualities. The bath had two sections with therapeutic pools, and bathing halls with showers and stone basins (kurni). The resort flourished until the early 1990s, and over the years a lot of related infrastructure was built (a park, a sanatorium, an extra floor for more treatments). Thousands of people were helped by the healing water over the years.
In 2004 Provadiya Municipality sold the bath and its land to a Sofia company. Under pressure from civil society, a referendum was held in 2017 on returning the bath to municipal ownership and restoring its function, but it failed because of low turnout.
The building is now in a sorry state – looted, abandoned and falling apart.
