About the bath
Berkovitsa is a balneological resort of national importance, designated in 1974.
At about that time one of the largest mineral baths and balneotherapy centres was built in the town park. It worked until the end of the 1990s as a medical mineral bath with a men's and a women's section, then was closed and privatised. It has bathtubs, a doctor's office, men's and women's pools and changing rooms.
In 2006 the mineral bath and 1 hectare of adjoining land in Berkovitsa were sold to the copper mining company “Elatsite Med”; the privatisation contract committed the new owner to renovate it and build a balneo and spa complex. The façade was repaired and a fence put up, but the spa complex was never built. The bath is closed and does not work.
The bath used to get its mineral water by pipeline from the “Barziya” deposit. In 2019, with European funds and money from Berkovitsa Municipality, a new mineral water pipeline from the Barziya deposit to Berkovitsa was built at a cost of over 1 million leva.
