About the bath
The bath is part of the medical complex of “Specialised Hospitals for Rehabilitation Marikostinovo” EOOD, where various treatments are given. The buildings stand in well-kept parkland. The place has been known since ancient times. An old Turkish bath, built on Roman-era foundations, survives here and can be rented by the hour.
The “Marikostinovo” mineral bath is open to everyone, unlike other parts of the complex such as the mud therapy centre and the thermal lake, where you need a medical examination to be prescribed treatments.
The bath is in a solid building, probably put up in the 1960s. The facilities are worn, but the staff make an effort to keep them up. Each of the two sections has changing rooms with cubicles, a shower section and a bathing hall with several stone basins (kurni) and a therapeutic pool.

The water and its healing properties
You can find all the benefits of the water on this website (https://sbr-marikostinovo.com/index.php/)
The water rises at 38–63 °C. The mineralisation of the water from the “Marikostinovo” mineral water deposit, village of Marikostinovo, Petrich Municipality, Blagoevgrad Province, is 1043 mg/l. It is hyperthermal, highly mineralised, hydrocarbonate-sodium, fluoride and silicic water. The water contains carbon dioxide and shows no sanitary-chemical or microbiological signs of pollution. The trace elements tested and the radiological values are within the norms for mineral waters.
It is suitable and recommended for treating:
- Diseases of the musculoskeletal system:
- degenerative (generalised osteoarthritis, gonarthrosis, coxarthrosis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis);
- traumatic (sprains, dislocations, fractures, Sudeck's syndrome, strain injuries of the musculoskeletal system);
- Diseases of the peripheral nervous system (cervicobrachial radiculitis, scalenus syndrome, lumbosacral radiculitis, plexitis, polyradiculitis, disc disease);
- Gynaecological conditions (pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility);
Used for drinking cures and balneoprophylaxis (after appropriate tempering to 35–37 °C), it has a beneficial effect on the following conditions: - gastrointestinal (chronic gastritis and gastroduodenitis, enterocolitis, peptic ulcers, etc.); - liver and gall bladder (gallstones, chronic cholecystitis, cholangitis, cholangiohepatitis, chronic hepatitis, biliary dyskinesia, etc.); - kidney and urological (chronic pyelonephritis and cystitis, kidney and urinary stones, conditions after lithotripsy, etc.); - metabolic (gout, obesity, diabetes, etc.).
The mineral water is used for drinking cures and balneoprophylaxis on medical prescription, following strictly defined methods and doses.
