About the bath
The Mud Bath is on the border between the former villages of Kamenitsa and Lazhene, on sandy ground with natural warm springs. Mud formed there, and it has been used for treatment since ancient times. Various authors mention simple wooden huts used as a public bath (Yosif Kovachev, 1912). In 1934, on the initiative of the mayor of Lazhene, Yosif Shniter began building a modern mineral bath with two sections – for men and for women – with two pools and stone basins (kurni). The two bathing sections were separated only by a three-metre screen. The bottoms of the pools lay directly on the natural spring itself, which formed healing mud from the sand. The bath opened in 1937. On 20 May 1949 the Mud Bath was registered as state property. In the 1970s, during construction work on the “Large Swimming Pool” and the “Correction of the Lukovitsa riverbed”, the mineral water from the natural spring disappeared. Since then the bath has been supplied through pipes from borehole No. 4 “Vlasa” of the Kamenitsa – Velingrad deposit. By Decision No. 31/22.12.2011 of Velingrad Municipal Council the bath was handed over to the municipal enterprise “SIP” to run.

The water and its healing properties
You can find all the benefits of the water on this website (https://voda.velingrad.bg/2-uncategorised/2-kavna-bania/)
The mineral water of the Mud Bath, from borehole No. 4 “Vlasa”, comes from deep underground and is hyperthermal and low in minerals – up to 1 g/l. It is silicate-sodium-hydrocarbonate-silicic-fluoride water. The spring is 84 °C, and in the bath itself 39 °C. The water has a pH of 8.3 and a total mineralisation of 551 mg/l. It also contains trace elements such as tungsten, gallium, lithium, arsenic and others. Most important for treatment are the fluoride and metasilicic acid: in the Kamenitsa deposit, where the source that feeds the bath is, there is 8.6 mg/l of fluoride and 91 of metasilicic acid. The water is not suitable for drinking, only for bathing treatments. On medical prescription it is used in bathtubs and pools to treat joint, skin and gynaecological conditions, diseases of the peripheral nervous system and more.
