A public bath is a place with a long tradition and rules of its own. If you are going for the first time, here is what is worth knowing.

What to bring

  • A towel — most municipal baths don't provide one.
  • Flip-flops — for the floors around the pool and in the changing rooms.
  • A swimsuit — only if you are going to a mixed pool or a complex where men and women bathe together (see below).
  • Drinking water — you lose a lot of fluid in hot water.
  • Shampoo and soap — for the shower before and after bathing.
  • Some cash — some small baths don't take cards.
  • A swimming cap — some baths require one.

Naked, not in a swimsuit

Unlike Turkish baths (hammams), where you go in with a peshtemal or in underwear, in Bulgarian public baths with separate halls for men and for women people bathe naked — it is required. Swimsuits and underwear are generally not allowed. Don't worry: in the bath this is completely normal and nobody pays attention.

You only need a swimsuit in mixed pools and in newer complexes where men and women bathe together. If you are not sure which kind a bath is, check on its page whether it has sections for men and for women.

How to bathe safely

Shower before you get into the pool — that is the first rule of every bath. In hot mineral water stay in for 10–15 minutes and take breaks; if you feel dizzy, get out and sit down. Don't bathe right after a heavy meal or after alcohol. Drink water between dips. People with heart problems or high blood pressure, pregnant women and children should be more careful — if in doubt, ask a doctor.

The unwritten rules

  • Speak quietly — many people come to the bath for peace.
  • Don't photograph other people, especially in the men's and women's halls.
  • Respect the days and hours for men and women.
  • Don't wash clothes or shave in the pool; use the showers.
  • Leave the place clean — small baths are often run by one or two people.

After the bath

Rinse with lukewarm water, dress warmly in the cold months and rest for at least half an hour. Mineral water relaxes you — don't plan a long drive straight afterwards.

And finally: if you liked the bath — or didn't — leave a review on its page. It helps the next visitors and the people who look after it.
